Tyler Perry, You Are Hereby Sentenced
Let me just say it loud and clear for the people in the back: Tyler Perry must do jail time. Not actual jail time, but somebody needs to answer for what is happening on our screens with Beauty In Black. I have watched every single episode of this show, and I want that on the record — because it is not always an easy viewing experience. The redundant dialogue is still very much present, the plot logic continues to be optional, and yet here I am, episode one of Season 3, fully locked in and losing my mind.
To be fair to Tyler, he does have a gift for casting. For the most part, the actors on this show are captivating enough to carry the material even when the writing goes completely off the rails. They believe what they’re saying, and that counts for something. The one exception — and I’m just going to say it — is the actor who plays Norman. I know he is bordering on Black icon status and I respect that, but the way Norman is being played genuinely gets on my last nerve every single time he appears on screen. But we’ll get there.
Right now, I need to talk about this premiere, because Season 3 wasted absolutely no time throwing us into the chaos.
Horace, Baby, We Need to Have a Serious Conversation
Let’s start with Horace, because Horace has been on my mind and not in a good way. The homophobia on display in this episode was aggressive — and I mean aggressive aggressive. I’m not even gay and I was offended. It was almost like watching somebody swing a weapon they have no business swinging, especially when the evidence strongly suggests that Horace himself is bisexual at minimum.
Here is what I know: Horace has this ongoing, deeply strange dynamic with Angel. He has never slept with this young man, but he stares at him, he likes being in his presence, he orbits around him in a way that has a very clear sexual tinge to it. That reads as attraction. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with a man being attracted to another man — nothing at all. But Horace is out here with his homophobia turned all the way up while simultaneously proving my entire point with his behavior.
And then — and then — Kimmie hit him with something real in that car conversation. She pointed out that maybe his problem with Charles isn’t just about Charles being gay. Maybe Horace is jealous. Jealous that Charles was able to come into his sexuality younger, that he got to explore and experiment with a freedom that Horace probably never felt like he had. That theory landed for me. Two things can absolutely be true at the same time: you can love your wife and still be working through who you actually are. But instead of sitting with that conversation, what do they do? They cut away, come back, and Horace and Kimmie have had sex. Like that’s the answer. You still jealous of your gay son, Horace, even after all of that? Sleep on it, boo.
I genuinely hope that over the course of this season, Beauty In Black lets Horace reckon with his internalized self-hatred. Let him make peace with how he identifies. Let him stop coming at everything with that ugly, aggressive energy that honestly reads like a man fighting himself more than anyone else.
Mallory Has Absolutely Lost Her Mind and I Need Everyone to Acknowledge This
Now. Mallory.
Girl. Girl.
Let me set the scene. Mallory drove a car through the wall of her own home — apparently because Horace was in there cheating on her. She destroyed her own house. A contractor came in and fixed everything up in under 48 hours, which is already Tyler Perry math, but fine. The agreement — made with Mallory’s messy, drug-addicted husband — was that they would pay the contractor in cash upon completion. The man held up his end. He delivered.
And Mallory did not want to pay him.
Not only did she not want to pay him, but this woman had the nerve — the absolute audacity — to threaten to call ICE. On a contractor. Who just fixed her house. After she drove a car through it.
I don’t care what anybody has done, we do not do that. That is not a weapon we reach for. That is calling a mass vigilante operation to come and kidnap somebody because you are cheap and wrong and don’t want to honor an agreement you made. And Tyler went ahead and layered in a whole sob story about this man having a foster home and a wife and responsibilities — so not only is Mallory refusing to pay him, she’s willing to destroy this man’s entire life over her own pettiness.
If I’m that contractor, I’m taking my work back. I’m pulling out every beam. I’m busting windows. Because who do you think you are?
What makes it worse is that Mallory’s behavior toward this contractor tells me everything I need to know about her sudden warmth toward Kimmie. She couldn’t beat Kimmie, so she joined her — right on time, just as Horace came back. That little alliance they have going? I don’t trust it. I don’t trust that smile. I don’t trust the shift. Mallory has no genuine respect for almost anyone around her. The closest thing she has to a real friend is Varney, and she can’t even act right with him.
Varney, You’re Not Getting Fired — But Horace Needs to Calm Down
Speaking of Varney — baby, breathe. You are not getting fired. Horace was disrespectful and completely out of line with you, but this family needs you too much and knows too much of their business is tied up in your loyalty for them to let you go anywhere. You are too useful. Sit down and let this storm pass.
The Jailhouse Circus: Norman, Roy, and the Art of Self-Incrimination
Now let’s talk about the people in handcuffs, because Beauty In Black carted off a whole roster this episode. Roy is in jail. Jules is in jail. Norman is in jail. And there is apparently a deal on the table — one person talks, one person walks, everybody else goes down.
Roy wants that deal. I don’t think it’s going to work out the way he thinks it will. My read is that Jules is the one who ultimately walks out of this. And Norman? Norman is entirely too arrogant to save himself. This man, upon being arrested, decided that the right move was to announce that he knows judges — essentially broadcasting to law enforcement that he has been bribing people in the judicial system. Every judge now associated with him just became a target for investigation. Norman called himself making a power move and handed prosecutors a gift. He genuinely pisses me off.
We don’t get a ton of time with the jail storyline in this episode — they’re mostly shown at the top being carted away, all furious that Horace turned state’s witness. But that thread is clearly going to be a major driver this season.
Rain’s Moment in the Fur and Officer Alex’s Impossible Commute
Rain stepped up in this episode, fur coat and all, to announce to everyone at the club that she is now in charge. Jules is in jail, and she is doing things the Rain way. It was a cute moment. I want to take Rain seriously, I really do — but no sooner than she finishes her whole speech, some woman pulls her into the office and Rain scurries right off. Girl, you just made your whole declaration and you can’t even hold the floor for five minutes? The backbone is still developing and we see that.
And then there is Officer Alex, who apparently had a full Matrix-level battle in an elevator — got stabbed, looked like he took one to the kidney — and then called someone to say he was two hours away and would be just fine. Two hours away. From an elevator fight. Where the other guy looked very much dead. Tyler, where is this man going? What is he doing two hours from where he just was? The geography of Beauty In Black continues to be a mystery that I do not have the bandwidth to fully solve, but I am watching.
Look — Beauty In Black is chaotic, it is absurd, and it does not always make sense. But it keeps me talking, it keeps me showing up, and clearly it keeps you all asking me to make these videos. So here we are. Season 3, and I am committed. Drop your thoughts in the comments — what did you think about this premiere? I want to hear everything. I’ll see you in the next one.
