“Love, Victor” Character Breakdown: Are Benji and Victor Endgame?

If you know anything about Hulu’s “Love, Victor” you know about the main couple. Benji Campbell and Victor Salazar’s relationship was an adorable coffee-shop slow burn in the first season. Unfortunately by the end of the second season our perfect ship was up in flames, leaving fans to wonder if they will ever find their way back to each other. 

It’s a toss-up for sure, especially if you consider what made them fall apart in the first place. Benji and Victor are at very different places in their lives, despite being around the same age. Victor has just come out and is dealing with the repercussions of an unaccepting family. Benji has been out for a long time and his family, though not perfect, has come to terms with his sexuality. Because of this, they clash about everything. The days of dancing to Carly Rae Jepsen are over for sure. The fighting is here to stay, at least for the season.

It’s little things at first, Victor puts off coming out at school and hurts Benji through his actions, Benji is right to confront him. Then Benji teases Victor around his friends, making fun of the fact he’s on the basketball team without taking into account how that might hurt Victor. It’s not cool but after a heart-to-heart at the end of the episode, they seem to be on the same page again. Then there are bigger things that are harder to deny; Victor is hesitant about sex but instead of being honest with Benji he deflects the entire episode, which was my first hint that this relationship was not going to end well. If you feel like you can’t be honest with your partner about sex then you should not be in that relationship, you obviously don’t trust that person enough. Benji and Victor begin snapping at each other over every little thing, when Victor expresses his concern over Benji’s past as an alcoholic Benji snaps back that he’s always there for Victor, even when Victor’s making a huge deal over every little thing in their relationship and he needs the same back, just this once. 

It’s a fair argument and it sheds light on a huge flaw in their relationship. Though Benji and Victor have excellent communication their long talks are always precipitated by Victor feeling insecure in their relationship. He’s new to being an out gay man and so everything is an emergency in his eyes. Benji, who has been out for years, tries to talk him through these new discoveries but because of that, he’s the one providing all the support in their relationship and getting none in return. Relationships are all about give and take, right now Victor is taking too much and not giving enough, and Benji is facing the consequences. 

Not that Benji is innocent in this. He pushes for Victor to cut off his mother after witnessing how she treats him, and while that’s understandable there’s a nuance that he refuses to see. Victor’s mother, Isabel, immigrated from Puerto Rico an unspecified about of time ago. She grew up in a very conservative Catholic family and has raised Victor in the same manner. Knowing that about his mom, Victor knows that the baby steps she makes towards acceptance throughout the seasons are actually huge wins. Benji doesn’t have that context so he sees Victor’s celebration as a fool’s hope and berates him for it. Even when Victor tries to explain himself Benji refuses to see it. 

And then, of course, there’s the betrayal of trust. Throughout season two we’ve been learning more about Benji’s past. He was an alcoholic some time previous to the show, got into a horrible car accident, and now is in Alcoholics Anonymous. Benji tells this, somewhat reluctantly, to Victor and makes him promise not to tell anyone. Of course, he wouldn’t reveal this very personal piece of information about his boyfriend to anyone! Right? Well… 

He tells Rahim after a fight with Benji. It’s not meant to be vindictive, he’s honestly just worried his boyfriend will do something stupid and needs someone to talk to. But he did it without Benji’s knowledge or consent and he told someone Benji barely knows. Not a great look. 

With all that in mind, it’s no wonder they break up by the end of the season but will season three get them back together? I think no, not yet. Victor and Benji obviously have some things they need to work on and it might be better if they do that apart. Then there’s Rahim. 

Rahim and Victor have obviously connected, they both come from a family of immigrants, they’re both very new to being out, they obviously love spending time together. Sparks are flying. Victor needs to figure out who he wants to be in a relationship and Rahim might be the guy he needs to do it with, season three is going to be Rahim and Victor’s time to shine. But it’s going to be a growing-pain type of relationship, not a forever relationship. Rahim and Victor will figure themselves out together and part, hopefully as friends. 

And then, if all goes well, Benji will still be there. So are Victor and Benji endgame? I think yes, but they need this break. It’ll be a long road for them to come back together, but I believe eventually they will. Have you seen the way they look at each other? I need no more proof than that.
