‘Gossip Girl’ (2021): Season 1 Episode 6 Breakdown

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR EPISODE 6 OF GOSSIP GIRL (2021), TITLED “PARENTSITE”.

Episode 6 opens as all episodes do, with a long Gossip Girl monologue. This time she is talking about privilege, and we see that Obie’s mom has arrived in town.  Things between Zoya and Obie are a bit strange, and things aren’t going great for Julien either. She did poorly on her PSAT and Father Calloway is Mad.  She is going to retake it, but first, she needs to work on her brand!

While Zoya is having breakfast with her father, he is busy texting Katie Keller!  We also learn that he reads the Gossip Girl account, and that gave me my first laugh of the episode!  Audrey is still at the hospital with her mom, and Aki and Max have been coming in to give her food and clothes.  Max gets a text from Rafa and he blocks his number. The duo finally convinces her to leave to go to school.

Katie has created a complex posting schedule for Gossip Girl. That’s when Nick Lott texts her and invites her to dinner. Her teacher friends convince her to accept so that they can get tea on Zoya. She agrees. DON’T YOU DARE HURT NICK LOTT!!!

Gossip Girl: Episode 6 Breakdown

Julien has decided that she wants to be a more authentic version of herself, and Luna is very excited to help her get there.  Outside the school, Max is confronted by Rafa.  He wants them to get back together, but Max is staying away!  Obie and Julien have a chat about the future.  She wants to be a better person, and I for one am proud of her.  When Obie and Zoya are alone together, things are very awkward.  The Simon incident has definitely made things worse.  Later, Rafa sees Max and Aki together.  He has an idea; get Katie to let him use the GG account. 

Zoya goes to meet Obie’s mom.  She tells him they’re dating, and she initially doesn’t believe it, but then Zoya shows her photos that don’t really prove anything, and then his mom believes it.  Zoya is quite sad until she and Julien talk on the phone. Julien convinces her to go to dinner with Obie’s family. At Zoya’s house, Nick and Katie have a LONG chat. He tells her a lot about his life, his ex-wife, and then they go on a date together.

Back at the hospital, Audrey is still freaking out at hospital workers, and the actress who plays Audrey continues to have excellent comedic timing.  At the same time, Max sees a GG post that says he has an STI, which is UNTRUE!

At dinner, Zoya, Obie, Audrey, Aki, Aki’s mom and dad, and Obie’s mom sit together.  The guy from Clockwork Orange plays Aki’s father which was shocking!  Zoya is not a fan of the work that Aki’s father and Obie’s mother do, and she makes that known.  Audrey is pot-stirring, which makes the scene enjoyable to watch.  Obie doesn’t side with Zoya, or what he really thinks, and that causes more Zobie conflict.

On the Katie and Nick date, Katie reveals that she wanted to be famous when she was younger.  She was terrified of being ordinary, and writing was the only thing she was good at.  Then she met someone who was better than her, and was like, “welp, I guess I’ll be Gossip Girl.” I related to what she said on a fundamental level, which did make me like Katie more. 

During dinner, we find out that Aki’s dad has a discrimination lawsuit against him from an LGBTQ worker.  AKI’S DAD IS A BIGOT AND THAT ADDS DEPTH TO AKI AS A CHARACTER!  Zoya and Audrey yell at him for not being woke.  Audrey subtly outs Aki to his parents, then panics in the bathroom.  While freaking out, she gets an update on her mom.  It is so clear that Zoya and Obie need to break up.  They fight for a bit after dinner, and it’s just a disaster!

At the end of Katie’s date, she checks her phone, and Jordan (the Male teacher) has posted her date on the GG page.  Jordan is clearly just upset with Katie because he has a crush on her, and he is a big child. Obie shows up at Julien’s apartment.  Obie lacks the ability to hold himself accountable, and Julien calls him out for it. Max gets a text from Rafa, who is about to go on a date with Max’s dad.

The next day, Obie protests against his mom and Aki’s dad.  Julien goes to join the protest, and then Zoya leaves to go to the protest. We find out that Audrey’s mom has sepsis. Audrey and her mom have a touching scene together.  Both actors are quite good at acting, and I genuinely felt something.  Max and his dad also have a talk.  They reconnect, and it’s also genuinely sweet.  He warns his dad to stay away from Rafa.

Julien shows up at the protest, and Obie tells Julien that he took her advice, not Zoya’s.   Zoya shows up and instantly knows things are over between them. In all the chaos, Aki finds his dad.  When leaving, they’re confronted by a newscaster who asks about the lawsuit, and his father immediately outs Aki on TV. Zoya and Julien confront each other.  Julien finally confesses to Zoya that she still loves Obie, and she storms out. Jordan convinces Katie to dump Nick for the good of the Gossip Girl account, and now any goodwill I had towards Katie is GONE.

Max and Aki get a surprise dinner from Audrey, who cooked a grandiose meal. There is no part of me that thinks she could have made something that grandiose, but it is still a nice moment.  After dinner, they all have a three-way. While it is happening, Aki’s dad calls him and tells him that he wants him to stay away from Julien.

Max texts Gossip Girl a video of him and Rafa having sex. Suddenly, it is deleted, and Katie confesses that Rafa has access to the account.  We don’t know if he knows that they saw it 

The episode ends with the protest getting violent! Julien and Obie escape and then they make out.  Things are heating up, and now we have to wait until September for more episodes!
