‘Beyond The Gates’ Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: When Family Becomes Your Lifeline

I don’t know what it is about a strong Black man crying out in weakness, a strong Black man being brought to his knees with the deep desire to want to fix it, to help, to take whatever is harming their loved one—and he can’t do nothing about it. I saw all of that and more in Mr. Vernon Dupree, and I said, you know what? Vernon, I think I’m fully on board now.

Look, if you’ve been watching my breakdowns from last season, you know I was always side-eyeing Vernon and Anita. I wasn’t always a fan of how they led the family, how they chose what secrets to hold versus what secrets to share. The way they were playing all the family members as pawns and little chess pieces? I didn’t necessarily love that. But now? All that’s forgotten. Vernon, what you need, babe? You need me to fix your sandwich? Because my God, the weight, the heaviness, the angst was just so palpable.

We’re getting some really beautiful performances tied to the Anita-has-cancer storyline in Beyond The Gates, and it is mesmerizing and gut-wrenching at the same time. At least that is my experience, and I’m only here to tell you all my experiences as truthfully as I can.

When Daughters Become Their Father’s Keeper

I love that Dani could see the need in her dad, and she stepped up in this episode to create a safe space for him to unload and release his angst, his fears, his frustration, his anger—all that he’s feeling tied to this. Vernon is working very hard and doing a great job at being the emotional and physical rock for Anita. And that looks like being her protector, fielding questions, managing her experience as she’s navigating not only the diagnosis but the process of actually treating the cancer.

But to Dani’s point, that creates a space for him to not actually be able to let out what he’s feeling, to be able to feel what he’s feeling, because he’s so focused on providing Anita a certain experience and being a great and strong partner. Which is very commendable. But as a person in his own right, he needs to be taken care of as well.

And that honestly felt like the theme of this episode—everybody figuring out who is going to support who so that everybody can make it through this. The closer you are to the nucleus that is experiencing the issue (which is Anita), the more you feel it. And then the further away you are, the less you feel it. That’s calling in everybody around those people to constrict in and figure out how to support that person who is closer to the nucleus.

The Dupree Unit Strengthens Under Pressure

When we look at Dani, she’s Anita’s daughter, so she’s going to feel it right away. But she’s also Vernon’s daughter, and Vernon is Anita’s husband, and she can very well see that this is hitting him. And he doesn’t have anybody to go to. We don’t get to see Vernon have other best friends. Anita is his best friend. She kind of is his whole world.

While Dani has Bill that she can run to as well as Andre that she can run to—two very strong pillars—she can see that her dad doesn’t have anybody. Nicole can still run to Ted, she can talk to Kat, she can talk to that damn new doctor. There are people around who are going to conspire to lift her up and support her through this time. But when you look at Vernon, he just has his wife and his kids, so his kids are going to have to step up.

I’m gonna go to Martin, who divulges to Smitty in this episode what is going on. And Smitty is so steadfast and so focused on, “Well, do what you gotta do to support your granddad,” because Martin also sees that Vernon is going to need somebody. He doesn’t have anybody. And Smitty says out of his mouth, “I got you. You have your grandfather.” Ate it up, ate it up. Absolutely loved it.

This is reaffirming to me how strong the Dupree unit actually is. It’s in these moments that their unit, their family, their legacy, their ability matters the most—not when they’re wielding that social power and political clout and a little bit of that money. All of that’s fine and good, but when you can actually turn to your left and your right and see somebody who is willing to hold you up when you feel like your knees are about to buckle because the world is hitting you and won’t stop hitting you? That is when family matters. That is when being loved and being seen actually matters.

Bill Steps Up in Unexpected Ways

I want to go back to Vernon real quick because in addition to him spending his time worrying about creating a safe environment for Anita to fight this and heal, he still sees what the hell is going on. When Dani walks in with Bill, Vernon’s like, “You wanna go get some lemonade? Because I’m not understanding. I’m not computing. I thought that you would be leaning on your husband, not your ex-husband.”

And I said, damn, Vernon, you got time to worry about this? But Dani reassures him like, “You do not have nothing to worry about. I went to him as the father of Naomi and Chelsea, as nothing else. I will be leaning on Andre. Andre is my rock. Andre got me, and Bill is going to be involved because the kids are actually involved.” And you know what? She ate that.

However, I’m not surprised that people are constantly still questioning, because Andre and Dani are still so very new—especially them being so passionately in love and so made for each other and so visibly like, “Yeah, they belong together.” That is still very new. And then also, when Bill shows up, he shows up like this grounding presence that was always meant to be there. So it’s so easy to see Dani falling back into folding into the love and protection and the care that could come from Bill.

And it’s so interesting because when we first met him at the start of Beyond The Gates in season one, it was clear there was something there. I’m like, “You just being a little bit too petty for me, so you must still love her.” But now it’s like he doesn’t move with the same animosity, with the same petty. He doesn’t even have the same ire in his eyes. So it also creates a circumstance where everybody gotta look at the two of them—Dani and Bill—and be like, “Wait a minute, what’s going on here?” Because the love looks palpable between them. The connection still looks palpable between them, even though their circumstances have drastically changed.

Bill and Anita’s Powerful Moment

While Vernon is talking to Dani about Bill, Bill is in there talking to Anita about how she needs to move forward. And you know what? This was the perfect matchup that I didn’t think we was going to get again so soon. We saw them running to each other a few episodes ago at the hospital, and they had words there.

What’s so interesting about watching Bill give Anita this advice is that he gravitates to Vernon so readily because he had issues with his dad, and Vernon was like the dad he never had. But Anita very much so gives “mom he never had.” And a mom he still desperately wants. We don’t hear him talk about his mama, and now I’m like, I need to know more about Bill’s mama. Because even how he was engaging with her—of course he still loves the Duprees, I would never claim that he don’t care about them—but there’s something else there.

He very much so gave like, “You’re going to beat this, but you’re going to beat this with the help of everybody around you. And I know you because I’m just like you.” Almost like he had a little bit of pride in knowing that he’s just like Anita, and “This is what I did wrong, and this is what I don’t want you to do wrong.”

He pointed out how he was pushing everybody away, how he wanted to play big and bad when he had his stroke. And it’s times like that where you really can’t do that, where you have to lean on people around you because you just physically cannot. And that is just a part of it. It doesn’t make you weak, it doesn’t make you less than. If anything, the people who love you and admire you so much—the power, the bravery, and the vulnerability that it takes to open up and show your weakness makes you seem even more like ten times stronger.

He communicated that so eloquently in the conversation with Anita. And I was just like, “Dang, we probably about to get more Bill and Anita, but what is that actually going to look like?” This stuff gets tricky for me because watching Bill show up in this family, with this family, is just like—this is how it’s supposed to be. But Andre is still there and he’s great. He’s doing nothing wrong, and they both can’t occupy this one spot.

But Andre don’t have a relationship with Anita. Andre don’t know Anita like that. He could not give what Bill gave Anita in this moment. I don’t know, y’all. It’s going to be very interesting watching how they fall into the flow of navigating family during this yet another traumatic time. In the Anita-fighting-cancer storyline on Beyond The Gates, that is going to be about how they make room for both of these people.

We get in a preview that Andre goes to Ted for advice about Bill and him being around, so it’s like he’s going to feel a way about it. And I’m also just like, but Bill can’t go anywhere because he’s going to be a very valuable piece in the Duprees getting through this and Anita fighting this. He low-key might be a very valuable piece in Anita’s strength, because something about how Bill sees Anita is different and necessary. That’s all I really got right now—I can’t really expand upon it because it just hit the top of my brain, but I’m still percolating on it. If you agree, let me know in the comment section. Hayley’s Raggedy Energy Needs to Stop

Let me stay on Bill actually, because Bill, how many ways does this lady got to tell you that she’s raggedy? How many ways does this lady got to tell you that she ain’t good enough for you? How many ways does this lady got to tell you that this is a game that she’s playing, and you don’t actually matter to her?

Because the moment you came into the law firm and you reaffirmed to her that “I told you I was going to be here, I had to take care of my kids. You know how I care about my kids,” she replies, “Well, what about the kid I want with you?” The one that don’t exist? The one that will never exist because your ass is on birth control? Versus the ones that actually do exist, have been existing for decades?

Girl, I don’t want to lay hands on a woman, but Hayley, the moment that she brought up that fictional-ass fetus, I said, “Bill, enough, enough.” She apologizes after the fact like, “I’m sorry, I was being petty.” This is more than being petty. You’re being stupid. You’re being unnecessarily cruel. You’re being ridiculous, trying to play a game that you created yourself. But you’re constantly fighting every time you see this man with the Duprees.

Every time something happens with the Duprees, you’re throwing a damn fit about it. “They are my family. They’re my kids’ family. I’m going to forever show up for them. And now Anita, that matriarch, has cancer. You’re never going to not see me with them.” If you’re going to be mad about it, we might as well go get a divorce right now. That’s what I needed from Bill with that energy. He had a little bit of it, but it wasn’t enough.

Because we get the sense when she’s apologizing, he’s like, “Okay, it’s okay. You didn’t know.” She knows enough. She knows enough to not be raggedy. She knows enough to not be trifling. She knows enough to let it go. And if you don’t see the pressure on your neck that this bitch with no job is constantly putting on you, Bill, I don’t know what the hell else you can see. You must be a blind man.

Every time you turn around, this girl is beating your ass over the head about some bullshit when you got a law firm to run, kids who got kidnapped, an ex-wife who you still in love with, you’re jealous of her new husband, and a mother-in-law that just got cancer. You got too much going on to be running around after this goofy child bride with her insecurities and her wacky, petty ways. And the fact that you’re not more angry about it, Bill, is pissing me off.

Ted Finally Shows Up for Kat (For Once)

She needs and Ted ain’t going to talk about the kiss, but they are going to talk about what’s going on with Nicole. And he reveals like, “Oh, Nicole was in my office because her mama has cancer.” I don’t know how to talk to Kat about this.

When Ted runs down on Kat, which honestly, I’m going to give him credit—and y’all might as well go ahead and run a tracker, because every time that I give Ted credit, it’s going to be rare. I have no credit to give Ted most of the time, but if he deserves it, I’m going to give it to him.

The way that Kat was ignoring his calls and he popped up? That’s how you parent. That is how you parent from now on. That’s how you parent, because you’ve been doing that with Eva, but you’ve been allowing yourself to go to voicemail with Kat. Now I’m saying you pop up. That is how you parent. Just because she don’t want to hear from you doesn’t mean she don’t need to hear from you.

And then the first thing that you say when you come into contact with one another is, “I want you to know that I’m here, and after that, I’m going to still be here.” Okay, Ted. Okay, Theodore, you done got your ass back on the right track. It’s sad to say the only thing I’m gonna take—I’m gonna take a point from you because it’s taken your niece getting cancer to conjure up all of this great fathering. But it’s here, so we’re going to take it.

Kat is still in a place where she’s hurting. She’s over at the bar drunk as hell, throwing back tequila shots. She don’t want to hear nothing from Tomas. Y’all, I fear that I will never see it for Tomas. There is nothing that he can do, there is no amount of time that he can be here that I will ever start rooting for him with this girl. I don’t trust him with her. I don’t like him with her. I know that he has nefarious-ass intentions. I don’t believe him to be a good person, on top of a myriad of other things that come up once you start talking about interracial dating.

So all of the things that he was doing were mute to me. When Kat was pushing his ass out and shutting down on him, I said, absolutely, take your ass back to work. She could be back by her damn self. So when her daddy showed up, I said, absolutely, this is what we need. And if your ass would have been where you supposed to be, Tomas wouldn’t be in a position that he’s in now. So you got hella work to do. Get to doing the work.

And I hope that he will, because part of me feels like this is just a one-off with Kat, and a broke clock is right twice a day. Because when he goes over to Martin’s after he leaves Kat’s, and She needs texts him, he’s like, “Oh, that’s just the hospital.” I mean, you ain’t gotta tell Martin your business because you don’t know what it is yet, but something about it just feels nefarious to me.

You need to get that lying spirit up off you. If you ain’t going to be 100% truthful, then don’t say nothing, because you don’t actually have to tell him anything about what’s on your phone. She ain’t text you about no damn hospital or some patient—you literally lying. I don’t know, y’all. I feel like She needs is going to be great for him, but he’s going to be horrible for She, because Ted is not where he needs to be as a man in his position.

To have access to the women that he has access to, to have arrived at the place that he is in life, to command the amount of respect that he’s trying to command—he is not right internally, and that pisses me off. I just look at Ted like… *side-eye*. But he checks on his kids, which again, I’m gonna give him more points for.
