‘Beyond The Gates’ Episode 81 Recap: Haley’s Villain Origin Story Begins

Haley’s Web of Lies Unravels

I thought episode 80 was great, but episode 81 said “step aside and let me show you a great new series.” I’ve been giving Haley the benefit of the doubt for the longest time. I’ve been saying, “Okay, she’s just a pretty girl with no family. Bill is her one chance and she took it.” I didn’t necessarily agree with her actions, but I could understand them.

Until today. Today marks the beginning of Haley’s villain origin story. Because WHAT DO YOU MEAN she opted out of her ultrasound but then told Bill they were going to email the video to him? So what, you gonna go Google how “the baby’s the size of an apricot” when they let you hit all? Somebody get this Jezebel off my screen immediately! But keep her there because she’s going to make for some really great TV.

I know we love to call Dani crazy. I know we love to have Dani be the butt of jokes and the one to blame. But she called it from the very beginning, and her intuition be intuition-ing! It’s only hearsay going around this hospital that “this is a healthy baby.” Bill comes and says yes, the baby is ten weeks, blah blah blah… and he ain’t seen a damn thing. Only for us to find out at the very end that there was NO DAMN ULTRASOUND.

Ashley, pack up your things, take your ass over to Amy’s house immediately because you need… oh, but she can’t tell because of HIPAA. God damn it! Y’all finally give Ashley something for me to actually root for her to be on my screen, and she can’t even say nothing. The one thing that makes her useful for this story, that makes her mediocre whiteness less mediocre, she can’t even share because she’s bound by HIPAA.

The Bill Hamilton Problem

How is Dani gonna find out there is no baby? When is Bill going to wake up? What the hell is wrong with Bill? That’s what I want to know immediately. Yes, I’m jumping out the window, y’all. What is it about Haley that you love so much? What had you stuck? What had you scared? What had you shook?

You need to break this midlife crisis down to me like I’m a kindergarten baby because the math is not mathing in my understanding. And the moment you can actually break it down, maybe we could address it.

I’m honestly on the boat of “Bill doesn’t actually deserve Dani Dupree” and as for me and my house, I’m still rooting for Dani and Andre. But if Bill is in a marriage where this woman is literally just a gold digger using him and taking him for a ride so she can come up economically, then I want him out of that as well. Maybe he can find a real love later in life.

Looking back at previous episodes now, I can see clearly that Haley is a gold digger. I feel like Dani needs to temper herself though, because she keeps saying the real thing out loud. It continues to build the narrative that she’s bitter, and nobody can see the truth. And it’s putting Bill in the position to be defensive, because he wants to protect the idea of this marriage more than he actually gives a damn about protecting the actual marriage.

Haley’s Hospital Dramatics

I am flabbergasted that there’s no baby. Wow.

So did Haley pull this just so she could make Bill stay home? In the last episode, she went to his job and he wasn’t there, and she found out he was at Dani’s house. So she takes herself over to Dani’s house and fakes being hurt so that now she “potentially could have had a miscarriage.” So now Bill will stay home and take care of her? Girl, that’s going to last 3-4 days max.

He has a whole Dupree emergency at hand. When Dani was trying to call to let him know what’s going on, he’s at the country club talking to Martin, trying to get Martin to point out the busboy he had seen. Bill says that Martin told him his dad gave the man a whole new face and didn’t even tell him. So Martin did something to this man and his brother? The man needed plastic surgery?

The way this story is continuing to bloom while we don’t have concrete evidence about what the main thing is… it’s starting to piss me off because they keep adding stuff that makes the story juicy, but not knowing what the thing actually is feels like a letdown.

The Audacity of Bill

What I don’t like about Bill Hamilton is how he immediately flips everything as being Dani’s fault when Dani is the reason his lying wife is in the damn hospital. Haley didn’t have to walk her ass into Dani’s house. You’re talking about “Dani needs to stop. Enough is enough. You just keep coming to her house.”

What the hell do you mean “Dani needs to stop” when y’all are in HER house? She can’t avoid you at the country club, and now she can’t avoid you at her damn house? And Bill wants to say “She needs to stop. Enough is enough.”

Dani made you a drink, served it herself while drinking, and took your lying-ass wife to the hospital because she claimed pains. Seems to me Dani’s a very upstanding citizen. And no, she can’t put her hands on a “pregnant” lady, but she’s got to love herself enough to suffer.

Bill, you just had this beautiful moment atoning for your sins, being accountable for the horrible person you were, only to turn around and say “Dani needs to stop.” Tell your wife to stay out of Dani’s house. How about that?

Nicole and Ted’s Explosive Confrontation

You would think CBS cared enough about my blood pressure to make the Haley/Bill/Dani drama the center of the episode, right? Wrong. Because over at Nicole’s house, not only did she have a confrontation with Andre, they made sure she didn’t leave the episode before having one with Ted. And I was just like, oh my God!

Nicole laid into Andre something fierce. To his point, I don’t know why she’s so upset. I get feeling uncomfortable because he’s much younger than Dani, but the way Nicole is dragging it? Girl, you’re really dragging it. I love that Andre stood up for himself and his relationship.

I get that he has his player reputation, which ultimately he’s got to be accountable to. If up until this point they’ve never seen him take anybody seriously or treat a woman how she should be treated, at the end of the day, your reputation speaks for itself. All he can do now is continue living his truth and not seek Nicole’s validation.

When Perfect Patty Gets Called Out

Where it gets tricky is when the conversation with Ted happens. Ted was about to tell Nicole about the Martin situation, but she assumes he’s coming to talk about Dani and Andre. They get into an argument, and both sides were saying true things.

What I don’t like is how Ted flips it on her with “nobody can live up to Nicole’s perfect expectations.” You had no problem when she was playing Perfect Patty as your perfect wife, and you STILL cheated on her. You still had a baby on her. You still abandoned her when she felt betrayed and lost. And now all of a sudden “nobody wants to let you down”?

That’s all stuff y’all cultivated on your own. You came to her with various things prior to her experiencing a series of betrayals. You pick the time she’s at her lowest to criticize her for being Perfect Patty, when Perfect Patty worked to put your damn family back together all the other times!

I was obviously triggered because I’d probably be the Nicole to my family – the one who at the end of the day gets it done. And yes, sometimes in a more professional tone. Your girl has a master’s degree in biology and my thesis was in immunohistochemistry. I get the whole Nicole “perfect” thing.

I don’t like when family turns on you and tries to make that your problem or your flaw when they had no problem benefiting from it. They had no problem reaping the rewards of you going hard and standing on business. Whenever stuff goes wrong, they go to Nicole, they go to Erica. But when Nicole or Erica have a problem and voice it, suddenly we’re “too perfect” and we “set the bar too high.”

No. You’re just trying to avoid rising to the occasion. It’s okay if you fall short sometimes, but it doesn’t mean I aim to lower the damn bar. Because at the end of the day, Ted, you still cheated with a lunatic. We’re still suffering in the present day for something you did 20 years ago and consistently lied about for 20 years.

The Kat and Tomas Situation

And I’m going to give a little shout-out to Tomas. Even though I’m still side-eyeing him, thank you for not taking Kat’s cookie because you actually want to slide into Eva’s DMs. Thank you for realizing how big of a deal this is.

Why in the hell would you have a 22-23 year old Black woman virgin, entrepreneur, very smart, amazing all-around – who waited until her 20s to have sex – only to have her saying “you don’t owe me nothing, there’s no exclusivity needed” after sex? What exactly are they trying to say with Kat? I thought the whole damn point of saving yourself was to give it to somebody special with expectations tied to that.

As a late bloomer myself (your girl didn’t lose her virginity until I was almost 21), it was with someone I loved and had known for a good part of my life. And it was not some “oh, it’s perfectly fine, this means nothing.” Because what the hell?

Y’all already have us watching Kat chase Tomas like he’s a prize, only to have her now reinforcing this stupid idea that he doesn’t have to be exclusive after she’s been throwing herself at him for half the episode.

Eva’s Foolishness Continues

And then we’ve got Eva’s goofy self over at the hotel fantasizing about Tomas, then running into him at the end of the episode. This is why I will not take my foot off Eva’s neck. Why are you lusting after your sister’s situationship while claiming you want your family to be together? You’re foolish, Eva. Plain foolish.

And writers, you’re going to pay for having Dani stand in that hospital with Ashley talking about “she’s sorry to hear about Derek” and telling her to “go find somebody tall, dark and handsome” while she’s lusting after Dani’s man. That’s trifling. Got my girl going out like that.

Beyond The Gates continues to deliver the drama we crave while giving us characters complex enough to argue about. I’m still processing Haley’s deception and what it means for Dani going forward. Will Beyond The Gates finally let Dani catch a break, or is she destined to keep getting blamed while everyone around her acts a fool? One thing’s certain – Beyond The Gates knows how to keep us coming back for more.
