‘Beyond The Gates’ Episode 77 Recap: When Nothing Happens But We Still Watch

Breakfast Club Redux: The Never-Ending Country Club Saga

I ain’t gonna hold ya. This episode was a dud, but I’m not complaining because I’m watching so much TV right now. Let’s get into episode 77 from season one of Beyond The Gates, though honestly, there’s not much to break down.

The episode opens with Vernon and Martin seemingly never leaving that damn country club – specifically their family table – because they’re back there at breakfast again talking about the same bullcrap. Martin’s trying to make heads or tails of these nightmares he’s getting, and they’re still trying to figure out who this busboy is. Vernon is now actually listening like, “Okay, let’s get to the bottom of it,” but I’m just sitting here thinking: Vernon, call your contact! Figure out from your private detective what’s the update on this person! Are they Intel? Have you heard anything?

It was just so much wasted time and space. But I don’t love what feels like recycling the same moments and specifically the visuals. We’ve been watching Martin and Vernon sit at this table for like the last six episodes, having this conversation going nowhere. Meanwhile, you still don’t reveal to us what the hell happened! What is this thing the busboy is holding over you? Why did he have those keys in that flash moment? Is Martin having another dream or hallucinating? We can’t figure out what’s real and what’s not – which could be intentional story elements, I’m not knocking it, but the execution felt very lackluster.

Chelsea’s Business Drama (That I Can’t Bring Myself to Care About)

Maybe the episode felt weak because it was full of storylines that aren’t compelling on their own. I do NOT care that Chelsea is getting sued. Maybe I care that Kat is getting sued by association with Chelsea. But if Chelsea stole the damn idea for the purse without realizing it, then she’s going to have to be accountable.

Chelsea drives over to check with her dad about the lawsuit where she talks to her sister. That’s something, I guess. But I don’t really care about the Chelsea character enough to be worried about her problems. Even at the start of the episode, she’s so preoccupied she doesn’t even want to talk about work because she’s focused on her love life and personal matters.

These are all the little things that make me believe Chelsea doesn’t actually want to be a mogul or boss building an empire. She’s too damn wayward and distracted – all her thoughts and most of her language makes it impossible for me to believe she’s serious about business. So when she runs over to daddy’s house crying about this potential lawsuit and warning papers, I don’t take it seriously because I feel like she’s not taking her own business seriously.

The show’s not taking Kat seriously either, and she’s not even the designer behind the brand – she’s operations, marketing, and logistics. So yeah, that’s also part of my frustration with this storyline.

Haley and Bill’s Relationship Drama (That I Also Don’t Buy)

Seeing Chelsea and Bill reconnect is somewhat interesting because we don’t usually see much of them, especially after watching so much back and forth between Naomi and Bill. Chelsea takes a few cheap shots at Haley, but honestly, Haley deserves every last one she gets. Don’t take nothing personal but take everything personal when someone steals your daddy – period!

Haley starts the episode confronting Bill about his $10 million insurance policy. She’s laying it on thick about how she can’t live without him and questioning if he found out something bad from the doctors. And I don’t believe her ass either! So that’s also part of my issue with this episode – I watched it thinking, “I’ll believe maybe half of what any of these people say.”

June’s Missing Photo Mystery (That Makes No Sense)

The only people I believed this whole damn episode were Naomi really trying to figure out what happened to June’s stuff. I kept thinking that stuff is long gone – the same thing Jacob was saying – only for him to come in at the end with a pristine box. You mean to tell me they cleaned up some homeless encampments and recovered this perfect box of stuff that definitely has the photo in it?

That’s not how cleanups work! I’m telling you that from living in LA and watching them happen. It’s a sad sight when they go through and take all these unhoused people’s belongings and basically just dump them.

We get a ton of time with June and Naomi, with June starting to crash out because she really needs this photo. But it takes me back to the episode when we got more perspective about the photo – she claimed she doesn’t even know who the people are in the picture! So maybe that’s my issue – half the storylines feature characters I don’t believe, and the other half still aren’t giving us enough information to actually care.

The Police Cover-Up (The Only Somewhat Interesting Part)

Maybe the most interesting thing in this episode was watching the detective talk to the chief (Jacob’s dad) as they try to figure out what’s happening with Smitty and this article. They’re very much in cover-up mode while Smitty is talking to Smitty about his investigative journalism.

This storyline also felt a bit false to me. If you’re dealing with a dangerous situation, why would you be unpacking it with your teenage son? I don’t give a damn what his IQ is or how high he rates – it feels inappropriate, so I couldn’t take it seriously either.

Setting Up for Something Bigger (I Hope)

This episode wasn’t interesting, but the little bits we did get are definitely setup for moving forward. I think Friday’s episode will have a major cliffhanger, which would explain why we got this lackluster episode before moving into something with higher stakes and more information.

Beyond The Gates seems to be following a pattern of building slowly before dropping bombshells, but this particular episode felt like it was treading water. I’m still invested in the overall story of Beyond The Gates, but episodes like this test my patience when characters keep having the same conversations without revealing anything new.

At least with everything else I’m covering right now – Beyond The Gates, The Voice, Sisters, and now Love Island every day on my second channel – I can take a breather with this one. So maybe it’s for the best that this episode didn’t demand too much of my attention.

I’m hoping next time Beyond The Gates gives us something more substantial to sink our teeth into, because these characters and their secrets deserve better development than what we got in episode 77. But I’ll still be here watching, because even when Beyond The Gates stumbles, I’m committed to seeing where this journey leads.
