‘Beyond The Gates’ Episode 73 Recap: When Secrets Slip and Engagements Happen for All the Wrong Reasons

Ashley Morgan: The Call Is Coming From Inside The House

I tried, y’all. I really tried to give Ashley and Derek a fair shake in my last recap, but episode 73 of Beyond The Gates has officially shifted my perspective. The Wonder Bread twins are no longer equally to blame for their bland relationship woes—Ashley is definitively the problem, and Derek actually deserves better.

Let me paint the picture: Derek takes Ashley out to a nice dinner after they’ve just navigated a rocky patch in their relationship. He asks her to get dressed up, makes an effort to reconnect, and what does Ashley immediately assume? That he’s breaking up with her. Girl, the call is coming from inside the house. You are the problem. You are quite literally putting your own foot on your own neck and then screaming about it.

Is Derek boring? Absolutely. Does he give Humphrey Bogart energy? Without question. But he’s still putting in effort with this menacing woman who’s about to start fantasizing about Andre (as we see in the previews) while simultaneously not being able to figure out what the hell she wants in her current relationship.

We’re supposed to watch Ashley spiral into Andre’s arms about a relationship that’s “so perfect” and “so wonderful”—yet when Derek moved into her house, she acted a complete fool over a scratch on the refrigerator and clothes left on the floor. Please, Ashley, free us from all this fake struggle love you’re creating. You quite literally have no problems. You quite literally have no issues except the ones you’re manufacturing.

An Engagement That Makes Absolutely No Sense

At the end of the episode, we watch Derek propose to Ashley, and I’m just sitting there thinking: what in the entire hell possessed you to do this, Derek? You had a failed move-in situation. You moved in, she went off, you moved out. Y’all thought about breaking up, then didn’t. And now you think the magic solve for not being able to connect, not spending time with each other, and not being able to communicate in this particular season of your life is to… propose?

If you couldn’t live together, of course getting legally married for the foreseeable future makes perfect sense. That’s definitely the logical next step. Listen, I need Ashley and Derek expeditiously off my screen because at this point, they’re just wasting valuable screen time that Beyond The Gates could be using for other stories—like what’s happening with Dani.

The Secret’s Out: Chelsea and Kat Catch On

Now let’s talk about the good stuff. Andre runs into Dani’s guest house this episode, apparently not knowing that the girls have moved in. We get to see Chelsea and Kat move their studio and their residence into Dani’s guest house so they can have more room and save money while launching their clothing brand. Cool, cool, cool—not a little bit disrespectful to the storyline, but you know what I’m saying, right?

At the end of the episode, Andre makes his usual move because he’s accustomed to having his little dalliances with Dani all over the damn house—whether it’s in her main house or her guest house. This time he runs into the guest house only to encounter Chelsea and Kat. And they knew immediately. By his temperament, by how he was talking, by how playful he was being—they knew immediately that he and Dani are fooling around.

I love this development because if they were going to keep trying to hide this relationship while also being in each other’s presence constantly, it was only a matter of time before someone figured it out. It’s not like they both lead isolated lives. They literally move with such intentionality and show up for everybody else. Nicole has already seen how they interact. People immediately noticed when Dani jumped to Andre’s defense when Nicole was going off on him. It was only a matter of time for everybody to find out.

Dani Needs to Stop Playing and Commit Already

At this point, I hope Chelsea and Kat discovering the truth will push Dani to finally commit to this relationship. She’s so worried about appearances—the divorce from Bill happened, Hayley’s out there rubbing her new relationship in Dani’s face. I get the hurt, I get all of that. But girl, you are actively, physically moving on with Andre. You’re enjoying your time with Andre. And in addition to him being a great sex partner, he is literally supporting you mentally, physically, and emotionally. So what else is it at this point?

You just need to go ahead and take the leap, even if you feel like you’re not ready. Sometimes the best things we jump into, sometimes the best seasons of our life, we are pushed into rather than walking into freely. I think this might be the catalyst Dani needs, especially because she cares so much about what her daughters think of her. Once Chelsea tells Naomi—and Chelsea definitely gonna tell Naomi—it’s like, okay, everybody can know because they know.

And y’all know who I’m really waiting to find out about this relationship. I need Bill to find out that Dani is with this hot young thing so that he can know he’s not the only one who can move on with a hot young partner. He’s not the only one having amazing sex. I need him to have another medical emergency—well, not another heart attack, but maybe another stroke like he already had—because Bill still wants Dani back and y’all cannot tell me otherwise. I can’t wait to see it. I shouldn’t be this excited for this man to end up back in the hospital, but here we are.

Martin’s Storyline Needs to Move Forward Already

Let’s talk about Martin because I am so confused at this point. Do you know what happened to you or not? Do you have amnesia? Are these nightmares plaguing your life, or do you actually have a clear understanding of what happened in your past?

In this episode of Beyond The Gates, we see Martin meet with Vernon, who’s also keeping whatever Martin did in the past secret—hiding it from Nicole, hiding it from his mom and dad, hiding it from the whole entire family. I think it’s only Vernon and Anita who know, plus Martin himself. But last episode, it felt like when he went out in the cold and saw that body, he didn’t actually know what was going on. Yet when he’s talking to Vernon in this episode, he does seem to have a clear understanding of the situation. Vernon even admonishes him, asking why he went to Nicole when she doesn’t know what’s going on and he’s supposed to keep this under wraps.

We don’t actually get any additional information about what Martin did. I do feel like it was a while ago. The waiter who’s been undercover at the country club, following Martin around, is still there. Toward the end of the episode, he whispers in Martin’s ear that same phrase we keep hearing in Martin’s nightmares, which is going to trigger him. But it’s left at a cliffhanger, so we don’t know what happens next.

I just need them to get to the point already. We’ve been dragging this storyline along since episode 18 or 20, and now we’re at episode 73. I need more information. I need them to stop talking about it and stop talking around it. It’s similar to the Anita and Archie situation—she’s finally in Chicago doing this whole thing with Archie, but even that storyline took forever to get to.

Honestly, I don’t want to watch Martin complain about nightmares anymore. I don’t want to watch Vernon and Martin talk around the issue. They need to actually let the audience know what happened, or at least start bringing other characters into the situation to make it feel fresh. We’ve gotten 20 or 30 episodes of them talking around what Martin did without really going into it. Is this the thing that’s going to make Martin lose his husband? Is this going to make Martin lose his Senate seat? What is actually going on? We need clarity.

This episode of Beyond The Gates definitely feels like setup for next week’s drama, which explains why there’s not too much happening. We don’t get any Eva, we don’t get Dana, we don’t get Nicole in any significant capacity. We do see Tomas helping the girls move, which reminds me: Kat, I need you to wake up. I need you to not give your virginity to this man. I need you to let this man go because he either wants Eva or he needs to be by himself. He’s not good enough for you, period.

Those are my thoughts on episode 73. Even in a setup episode, Beyond The Gates manages to give us enough material to discuss—from Ashley’s self-sabotage to the long-awaited reveal of Dani and Andre’s relationship to at least some of the family. Now we just need the rest of these storylines to pick up the pace and deliver on the drama they’ve been promising.
