‘Beyond The Gates’ Episode 3 Recap: Anita’s Explosive Release and the Power of Community

When Tough Love Becomes Necessary Love

First and foremost, let me talk about what Traci did in this episode of Beyond The Gates—because while I initially thought she was going a little too hard, the end definitely justifies the means. Traci pushes Anita to let it out, to express herself, to release the rage tied to the frustration and angst that is this cancer diagnosis and her moving into a season of treatment.

I appreciate Traci for pushing Anita in this conversation to bark back at her in that way, so that she’s able to get it all out before she goes in for her first chemo treatment. She’s released the hopes and the light—this is how I want this to go—but she’s also explored, at least a little bit, what happens if it doesn’t go her way.

Because here’s the thing: Anita has been expressing resiliency. She’s expressed some concern. Vernon has been a very important, strong pillar of hope, focused on “we’re going to get through this and everything is going to be all right.” But there needed to be some type of conduit for the pain that comes with the fear of “what if it doesn’t?”

If all someone is saying is positivity—if it’s borderline toxic positivity—you start to wonder: are you actually ready for if and when it does go left? Because it’s going to be dark, and you’re going to need to be able to climb your ass out of it.

Anita’s Moment of Truth

The way the conversation flows in this episode, it results in Anita blowing up, with Vernon walking in on the tail end of that explosion. And we really get a full, thorough understanding of where Anita is at and how she feels.

She defended her position. She defended her strength. She knows exactly where she is. She very clearly communicated: this isn’t toxic positivity—I’m choosing to look on the bright side, I’m choosing to do this because I have to. But best believe I’m gonna get down in the gutter and fight with cancer to the death. And it won’t be the death of me as far as I’m concerned.

Absolutely, Anita, you ate that one. You ate that one, boo. So Traci, I actually have no notes. While it seemed like a hard conversation to have, while it was uncomfortable, while parts of it felt like you were overstepping—again, the end justifies the means for me, because this explosive moment wound up being a cathartic moment for Anita.

Vernon Gets the Support He Needs Too

While Anita is going back and forth with Traci in this episode of Beyond The Gates, we get to see Vernon over at Martin’s house. And this is Martin’s way of showing up for his granddad, trying to take his mind off of it. He’s asking questions about how Vernon feels and wants to be there.

I love it. I love that Dani is on the front lines, but then Martin is also following up behind, because Vernon is the next most important person when it comes to this Anita cancer season. While a lot of energy and prayers and focus needs to be on Anita, Vernon is her number one supporter—the person right there going through it in the thick of it with her. He’s also going to need as much support as possible.

Martin created a great moment as they talked a little bit about politics and about life and how he feels. They have a little cute moment of like, “Wait, are you about to try to run against me because you’re talking about this and that?” And Vernon is like, “Listen, I gotta be able to help love my wife back to health through this cancer scare. I’m not about to be running for no damn office. But you know what? I did enjoy thinking about it for a second. I did enjoy politicking with you in this way.”

And I’m like, okay, this episode—on the outside, as an overview—I kind of thought nothing much really happened aside from Anita blowing up. But when you think about it, that was a really impactful moment with Vernon and Martin talking as well. So maybe this episode was a little bit more interesting than I initially gave it credit for.

Eva and Isaiah: Slow and Steady

Another conversation we get in this episode is with Isaiah and Eva, and for me, this was just maintenance of where their relationship is slowly progressing. I like the pace that they’re at right now. Eva is still a little cautious, but Isaiah is like, “No, you my girl.”

I just need more time. I need to hear him talk more because I’m not fully sold on Isaiah, but I’m not against him either. And I think that they look very great together. They clearly have great chemistry together. They’re moving at a slower pace, which I think is the thing that’s going to help Eva heal from a lot of the previous hurts and wounds and triggers that she has amassed over the course of her life thus far.

Having a mother that she has, I understand why she’s a little gun-shy when it comes to jumping into something serious with Isaiah. She doesn’t have it normalized for her to be the first choice or the full focus. And she’s finding it very uncomfortable to operate in that space.

I think Ambyr Michelle is performing as Eva so beautifully. She hasn’t missed this entire time. But as we get into the nuance of these more—I want to say lighter beats in humanity and love, but they’re not, because they’re deeply visceral—when you’re operating from the limiting beliefs that you’ve cultivated for yourself, it’s natural to you. But to play it as true as we are seeing Ambyr play it requires, I think, a good amount of technical skill.

I’m really enjoying watching how they are progressing, and specifically how Eva is navigating. The more time that Eva spends away from engaging with her mother, the more I like her. I’m gonna just leave that there.

The Debutante Ball Drama

Now, they run into Tyler Root and Jessica, and he’s on this kick where he’s trying to get Jessica to do the debutante ball, and Jessica is not having it. She’s like, “This is misogynistic bullshit and societal standards”—she’s got every reason why she don’t want to do it.

And I’m like, if she don’t want to do it, why are you trying to make her do it? I get that Samantha is doing it, but like, do you want to go and be on the scene with her? You trying to be her date? I didn’t really get clarity into that, and him being so gung ho about it was interesting, seeing them at odds on this particular topic in this way.

When I think about it, actually, I think he wants her to do the debutante thing because he wants her to see options of potentially going to Banneker and being in that world, because she’s also against Banneker and he doesn’t want her to go to UCLA.

I’m not really truly tripping about this young love storyline. They’re cool to watch. I don’t know—I like Jessica, but she was irking me a little bit in how defiant she was. She was just like, “No, absolutely not. I don’t like this, I don’t like that.” I’m like, okay, girl. But also, he was irking me about how gung ho he was about this debutante thing. I’m like, if she don’t want to do it, she don’t need to. Y’all can go to prom instead. Like, y’all don’t have to do it.

Nicole’s Tribe Shows Up

Nicole gets support from her tribe, her community. Moana and Laura show up—they heard about Anita, and they’re there for her. And I love the moments that we get to see their little threesome, this little unit that Nicole has built around her. I love Laura and I love Moana separately, but when they all come together, I love them even more.

They are just catching up and talking and pouring into Nicole. And I love that she has this in Beyond The Gates, because she doesn’t have a husband right there with her. She is dating Carlton—we haven’t engaged with him more. And I don’t know what that other doctor’s name is. I don’t even remember his name—that one from the Winterfest. We haven’t heard about him from her as of yet. She’s more excited right now about Carlton.

But I could totally see how she’s not gung ho into fully leaning on Carlton to be her strength as it pertains to her mother, because their relationship in the romantic space is a lot newer than their friendship has been. So I love that she has Moana and Laura to be able to depend on.

Vanessa’s Questionable Reactions

Now, Vanessa finds out from Nicole what’s going on with Anita, and then that sends her running into Joey’s arms. They confirm they’re actually a couple. Like, y’all seem like y’all really love each other. This is nasty. I don’t—but I guess if y’all are, man, okay.

And Vanessa, I get that life is short and all of that that you’re talking about, girl, but something else is going on with you. Because I get that you feel the way that you do and that your homegirl’s mom has cancer, but you are just so emotional. I’m like, girl, what else is happening? Do y’all know what else is happening? Because I don’t know.

I try not to pay Vanessa too much attention in Beyond The Gates, but I’m just like, girl, you just look for any reason to run into Joey’s arms and to be with the man that she says was supposed to be hers this whole entire time. Let her tell it, he was the one that was meant for her. She’s tired of being who she had been. Anyway, moving on.

I was more tuned in to when Nicole was actually revealing what was going on with Anita, and the clunky way that they had Nicole reveal it. They had Nicole take a little cheap shot at Vanessa about her boyfriend, her “criminal ass man,” before she’s like, “I’m sorry I snapped—my mom has cancer.”

I’m like, Nicole, your mom has cancer and you also have some decorum, okay? I mean, I don’t really care about taking shots at Vanessa, but it just was so egregious to her face and not typically Nicole’s style. Which I guess tracks, but like, you know, you’re in an unprecedented circumstance and you have this big thing you’re revealing to your best friend. So you’re going to be out of sorts. You’re going to be acting out of character. But that, to me—I was just like, damn, Nicole, we coming on like that? She took a shot immediately, and like, bam, straight to the head. But they recovered, and then that sent Vanessa running off to Joey.

And that was that. Those are my thoughts on episode three of Beyond The Gates. Hopefully this is the last time I’m gonna be playing catch up, but I hope you enjoyed my breakdown!
