‘Zatima’ Season 4 Episode 3 Recap: Zac’s Misogyny & Nathan Clips His Crusty Toenails

Another Angel Investor Falls From Heaven for Zac’s Lazy Behind

Let me start by saying not much happened in this episode of Zatima, but what did happen had me ready to throw hands at my TV screen. We open with Zac and Fatima having their regular couple moments, preparing for a dinner party that evening. Of course, Zac gets called into the office by Preston and can’t help Fatima with anything. No surprise there – he’s been giving Fatima’s second child.

What really grates my nerves is how easy life is for Zac. He has EVERYTHING handed to him! Not only did Bryce help him start this organization, find office space, and build out their real estate business, but after they get into their little kerfuffle and Bryce loses their money, here comes Preston to save the day. So not only do you get one angel investor in disguise, you get TWO! This man literally doesn’t have to do anything but say yes.

The Misogyny Jumped Out and I’m TIRED

The biggest part of the office scene is Zac leaning into his misogyny, and the way Zatima keeps parking on Zac not growing as a man, not growing as a person, and then doubling down on it using his interaction with Bryce. Now all of a sudden he’s cool with Bryce – over the kiss, over wanting to dissolve the business, over all of that because Preston’s here as a wonderful buffer.

But now Zac’s so comfortable that he’s giving Bryce advice about Angela. He’s saying Angela is trying to play Bryce because he’s doing kind things to get back in her good graces. Sir, this boy went off the handle, tried to harm himself and somebody else – he’s quite literally emotionally abusive and could be borderline physically abusive!

You’re saying this girl is playing him because she let him sleep on her couch? Because he came over and cooked her breakfast after he had her nudes and sex tapes plastered all over the internet? She’s playing him for cleaning up a mess HE made because he planted hidden cameras all around her apartment without her consent? Someone hacked into them and put all her nudes online, but she’s playing him? Zachary, PLEASE!

The Incel Energy From Men Who Get Sex

When Zac gets home and debriefs with Fatima (after not getting the exact things she asked for from the grocery store – surprise!), he proudly tells her he advised Bryce to check Angela because she needs to be put in her place. The way I wanted to reach through the screen! The moment I hear a male say a woman needs to be put in her place – what are you even talking about? What is my place? What is THE place?

I am so over these incel men, but specifically the incel men who get sex. Why are you moving through life with the attitude, temperament, mindset, and behaviors of an involuntarily celibate individual when you get sex? You don’t get to have it both ways! This is the problem – Fatima enables this so Zac gets to still be the raggedy individual that he is. Now everybody has to suffer because of it. Now her homegirl is catching strays from Bryce who won’t leave her alone because she paid him dust like she should have, all because your boyfriend put a battery in his back to be a misogynist.

Nathan’s Crusty Toenail Chronicles Continue

Moving on to Nathan – if you don’t want your wife, why don’t you get a divorce? If you don’t want to live at home with your wife and kids, why don’t you get your own place and move out? If you don’t like your life, why don’t you do something to change it instead of cheating on your wife, abandoning your kids, and clipping your corn chip toenails in Belinda’s house?

Belinda looks good – I don’t like her as a character, but baby, the actress that plays her! Her hair is so incredible, she is so beautiful. I love to look at her but can’t stand the Belinda character. In this episode of Zatima, Belinda throws Nathan out because he’s been there for three days and that’s a little too long. She needs a break, needs him to go back to his wife.

Belinda, I want better for you, baby. You can’t possibly think that all you’re worth is Nathan’s crusty toes and Zac’s as sloppy seconds. Do you see yourself, mama? When are we going to get the journey of her growth? When are we going to get the moment where she realizes she doesn’t have to be a side piece anymore?

The Body Disposal Plot Thickens

The only thing of substance that happened in this episode is Tony talking to Mr. Tyrone because apparently Tyrone helped him get rid of the body. Remember that man who came in thinking he was going to rob Tony last season? Well, that didn’t work out, and they got rid of the body. Now I’m actually intrigued!

I also need an update on what’s going on with Connie, because y’all be having dinner parties and nobody called to tell her nothing. Why are they breaking bread with Deja and Bryce but Connie ain’t getting an invite? Everybody was in the comment section of my last video saying “Well, they don’t know.” They don’t know because they move through life not even thinking about her! That’s part of the problem. The way Connie was trying to move mountains to keep Zac and Fatima together, and they can’t even check to make sure she’s cool? Haven’t even called her. They wrong for that, I don’t care what anybody says.

The Writer/Director Interview That Made Me Want to Quit

By the end of the episode, we get a moment where we see Jeremiah smoking crack in the projects, and his mama comes back to him in a vision. But let me tell you what really got me heated – somebody sent me a video that BET+ posted with the director and writer of this season of Zatima. Honestly, thank you for sending it, but I wish I hadn’t watched it because I’m disheartened by what I saw.

The director/writer said they don’t care about what happened before – this is what’s happening now. That feels like a slap in the face to the audience! We’ve already invested in watching three seasons of this show. If you’re abandoning or not paying attention to what happened before, then you’re disregarding all the time and attention the audience has put in. This is something that happened with Sistas where certain things were completely erased or reshot because they didn’t know or care about the backstory.

This makes me want to divest from actually consuming Zatima because yes, you’re coming in as the writer/director for this whole season and this is your baby, but not having any real synergy and not being able to create a through line from where they were to where you want them to go? Just deciding you want to do whatever you want? That’s disrespectful to the audience and honestly disrespectful to the characters.

He did say in that same interview that he had the benefit of coming into characters that were already fully formed that he didn’t have to create. But if you’re abandoning what happened before and not allowing your work to be informed by it, then it doesn’t even matter.

This episode was lackluster, but I’ve committed to telling y’all what I think about Zatima, so here we are. The misogyny, the enabling, the lack of growth – it’s all exhausting. But that body disposal storyline? Now THAT has me intrigued for what’s coming next!
