‘The Family Business’ Season 6 Episode 3 Recap: Junior’s Alliance of Losers Claims Its First Victim

I’m exhausted, I’ve got a flight to catch, and I’m pushing through this recap so y’all don’t drag me all weekend while I’m enjoying Baltimore. But we need to talk about The Family Business Season 6 Episode 3, because while some conversations finally happened and the stakes definitely got raised with that ending, I’m still struggling with this season’s direction.

Junior Duncan: Leader of the Misfit Toys

Here’s my biggest issue: Is Junior being the leader of this raggedy alliance really enough to carry an entire season? Because this man is such a monumental loser that watching him pretend to be a crime boss is becoming painful. To Chippy’s point during their confrontation, he’s now a liar AND a thief on top of being a loser. The trifecta of trash.

What really got me was watching Junior at that Republican senator’s party in Tennessee—you know, the RACIST senator who literally talked about stringing boys up in trees. This is the same senator from The Family Business: New Orleans who was out here talking about rope parties for Black men. And Junior’s standing there yukking it up with this man because he’s following Antonio’s goofy behind around like a lost puppy. Sir, this senator lost his election because L.C. backed the Democratic opponent, and now he’s put a $10 million bounty on Vegas’s head out of pure spite. He literally gave up his cut from robbing L.C. just to put a target on Vegas. And Junior’s perfectly fine standing next to this man, breaking bread with him, conspiring with him.

I cannot. Junior is truly in hell—no, he’s past hell. He’s hovering somewhere beyond it, and I don’t think he’s coming back.

Chippy Nearly Catches a Body (And Donna Deserved It)

The best moment of this entire episode was Chippy telling Donna exactly where she could go. When Donna tried to pull a gun on Chippy, talking about “I’d like to see you try,” Chippy didn’t even flinch. She said what needed to be said: “I have been WANTING to whip your ass.”

I felt the ancestors moving through Chippy in that moment. She’s been holding back every instinct to put Donna in the ground, and Donna really thought she could intimidate her? Baby, Chippy only got beat because you pulled a gun. In a fair fight, Donna would’ve been on the floor. When Donna tried to act tough, she immediately backed down like the punk she is. Because that’s what Donna is—a clown, a loser, a woman playing chess with checkers pieces.

I understand Junior wanting a relationship with his biological mother, but at what point does he realize that Donna didn’t want him either? Her behind was out here as a crackhead (if I’m remembering correctly), and she’s manipulating him like he’s a fiddle and she’s the world’s most mediocre musician.

The Goofy Alliance Strikes Again

When Sonya showed up at the hospital for little Vincent (I hate using that name, but I can’t keep saying “Orlando’s baby”), I got my hopes up SO high. She ran into Chippy and asked her to talk to Junior, and at first Chippy said no. But then she went and did it anyway, and I thought: finally, someone’s going to get through to this man.

But no. Junior’s sitting there talking about “Brother Minister wasn’t my call” and “I’m caught between a rock and a hard place because my mama did it.” Sir, your mama is PLAYING YOU. Antonio is condescending as hell every time he calls Junior “boss”—you can hear the disrespect dripping off the word. But Junior is so blind, so caught up in being the leader of something, that he can’t see he’s the leader of a group of misfits that L.C. has been putting his belt to for YEARS.

And then Junior has the AUDACITY to tell Chippy he “knows how marriage works” during their confrontation. DO YOU? Because how did marriage work when you slipped your behind to Consuela’s brothel for months, leaving your pregnant wife alone with your family? But sure, you know how marriage works. The delusion is strong with this one.

Miss LaRue: Rest in Hell

Now, the death that actually mattered this episode: Miss LaRue getting taken out at the end. The senator set up this whole elaborate plan to get Vegas, putting a $10 million bounty on his head, and these hillbillies really thought they could take Vegas Duncan alive. Baby, Vegas is not going back to prison. That’s just not happening.

But when they tried to set up Vegas and the whole plan went sideways, Miss LaRue ended up being the one in the crosshairs. And honestly? This was the best thing that happened all episode. It raises the stakes. It shows that The Family Business isn’t playing around. Somebody finally paid a price for all this foolishness, and I have a strong feeling Donna was on that roof taking that shot. That might be all we see of her for a minute, but the consequences are just beginning.

The Scattered Storylines That Need Focus

There’s so much happening in The Family Business Season 6 that some of it feels scattered. Curtis and Nevada’s whole situation got weird this episode—she’s talking about how she’s done with her grieving period and ready to commit, and Curtis hits her with the “see, what had happened was, I don’t actually want to commit to you.” Then he takes his behind back to New Orleans? Sir, why are you leaving when everything is hitting the fan HERE?

Then L.C. mentions that Lauren and Curtis might have to come back, but we haven’t seen Lauren all season. Is this setting up a The Family Business: New Orleans Season 2? I don’t know, but I need clarity because right now it feels like we’re juggling too many balls.

Paris is out here breaking into Bobby the Beast’s house, planting cameras in teddy bears, and leaving her underwear in his bed to mess up his relationship with Karen. I’m not mad at her dedication to revenge, but I need this storyline to move faster. She’s clearly planning to sabotage his retirement fight, and Bobby’s about to lose everything—his fight, his girl, his reputation.

Roman getting his own car from Rio led to Orlando standing at the window hating like a younger sibling. Sir, your son Vincent is in the hospital and you’re worried about Roman getting a vehicle? Make it make sense. But I do think this is building toward a confrontation between Orlando and Roman that’s going to get ugly.

Final Thoughts: Pick Up The Pace

We’re only three episodes into a ten-episode season, which means we’re not even halfway through, and I need The Family Business to pick up the pace. Junior being the leader of this alliance of losers isn’t enough to sustain my interest if we don’t start seeing real consequences and real movement in these storylines.

The one thing I AM consistently enjoying is Vegas’s fight scenes. Michael Jai White gets to show off his martial arts expertise and military training, and those sequences are consistently the best part of each episode. Give me more of Vegas handling business and less of Junior pretending to be a crime lord.

I do think this season would elevate significantly if we find out Donna is actually playing Junior and planning to backstab him for Antonio. If she’s not really aligned with her son and is just using him, that would make this whole messy situation way more interesting. But right now, as it stands, Junior leading a group of misfits against his family isn’t giving me what it needs to give.
