Carl Weber’s The Family Business Season 5: A Slow Burn with a Twist of Madness?

As we take this deep dive into Carl Weber’s The Family Business Season 5 Episode 2 I can still say I am nursing heartache over Sasha Duncan’s untimely death. So, bear with me as we navigate through this season.

The Slow Start to The Family Business Season 5

The first few episodes of this season feel a bit sluggish. One thing I’ve noticed about Carl Weber’s television series is that he takes a few episodes to set up the main story for the rest of the season. It’s a formula that works when it comes to character development and plot setup, but it can feel slow when you’re itching to dive into the action.

With the recent shock of Sasha’s death and LC’s escape from the asylum, I was hoping for a faster-paced start to the season. However, Weber seems to be sticking to his tried and true formula of slow-burning story setup. It’s not terrible by any means, but it does make the episodes feel shorter than they are.

The Mystery of Vegas’s Case

One of the more intriguing plot points this season is the mystery surrounding Vegas’s case. We see LC taking out one of the “southern gentlemen” (read: racist extortionist) who wanted to be paid to keep his mouth shut about the case monthly, not just in the lump sum LC negotiated with Sheriff KD Shruggs. This raises the question: what do these people know that could potentially put Vegas back in jail or blow up the spot revealing that Vegas went to jail for LC?

The interesting part is that LC might have been planning to kill the man all along. However, I’m not fully convinced that he wouldn’t resort to paying for silence if it was necessary. It must be some significant piece of information that could either put Vegas back in jail or blow their cover.

LC’s Erectile Dysfunction and His New Relationship with Brandy

Another one of LC’s seemingly many story lines this season is his struggle with erectile dysfunction,but more specifically physical intimacy with Chippy. It seems the time with Larry in the nut house is having lasting effects that have made their way to his neither regions. Instead of discussing it with Chippy, he decides to buy Brandy a practice as a thank you for helping him. Well one is not directly related to. the other but it just doesn’t sit right with me that he gifts Brandy a medical practice after all this girl has done. She may play sane well at times, but she is still crazy!

Junior’s Downfall

Junior, on the other hand, is on a path of self-destruction. His relationship with his wife, Sonya, is on the rocks after he finds out his mother isn’t his biological mother. It what world that becomes your new wife’s fault or problem, I do not know but leave it to Junior Duncan to find a way. Instead of dealing with his feelings of betrayal, he decides to punish Sonya, who was merely present when the family secret was revealed. This is a prime example of misplaced anger and it’s frustrating to see Junior throw away his relationship with Sonya over something she had no control over. While he buddies up with Donna who is also apart of the lies and deceit but he has seemingly found a new home with swearing to never talk to “The Duncan’s” again. Newsflash Junior, Donna is a DUNCAN TOO!

London missing Mariah’s Struggles

London and Mariah also have their share of struggles so far this season. Mariah runs away because she believes her mother killed her father, Harris. This revelation to Nevada when he goes to rescue her from her failed runaway mission, makes her actions more understandable, and it will be interesting to see how London reassures her in the upcoming episodes.

Rio’s Misplaced Anger

Rio is another character that’s been getting on my nerves this season. He’s so focused on getting revenge on Low Jack for returning his mother’s stolen car when everyone else involved has moved on and let it go. His misplaced anger and lack of focus are why he’s not one of the assassins of the family and this sorry attempt to show that he is capable of more savage task will ultimately back fire because the Duncan’s have way bigger fish to fry this season.

Final Thoughts

While the slow start and character development are appreciated, I can’t help but feel frustrated with some characters’ actions. Junior’s downfall, LC’s weird choices, and Rio’s misplaced anger all contribute to this feeling. However, the mystery of Vegas’s case adds an intriguing element to the season, and I’m curious to see how it unfolds.
