The long-anticipated return of Carl Weber’s The Family Business Season 5 has left us with mixed feelings. For the uninitiated, The Family Business is a crime-family drama series where every member of the Duncan family has their fair share of problems that would make even the most hardened of criminals cringe. If you’ve bought all the way into this narrative and are clinging on for dear life as the Season 5 rollercoaster takes off, then this is the place to be.

Is Sasha Really Dead?

Let’s deal with the biggest heartache first. We lost Sasha! Season 4 answered the question of where is Sasha as we got her gorgeous home-going service at the end.  Remember her ya’ll, The Beautiful, Complicated yet SAVAGE Sasha Duncan!  Sasha and Elijah’s relationship was blooming, and we’d barely started celebrating this on-screen couple’s romance when Sasha was ruthlessly taken away from us. How could they do that to us?! We have major beef with Carl Weber over this one but do you think that Sasha is really dead?

The Love Saga of JR and Sonya

Looking at JR and Sonya’s situation, am I the only one who feels like JR is making a monumental mistake? Standing by his mother, Donna, and pushing his true love, Sonya, to the sidelines? It’s given hell no, JR!  Absolutely Not! You stood by your mother’s side despite her years of deception. I mean, I get it, she spoke first about who your real mother is and unearth the lies the Duncan’s have been telling you for years but are we forgetting that she went along with the lies too?

Now, Sonya has to deal with yet another betrayal, after escaping the clutches of a psychopath, Brother X,  and I’d completely understand if she decided she was done. If Sonia chooses herself and her peace this time, it would be the smartest move she could make. For her and her baby, if she chooses to keep it.

Enter Sheriff KD Shruggs

So, we now have Sheriff KD Shruggs at the table, thanks to LC. As far as questionable decisions go, this must rank somewhere near the top, right? We have to begin to question his mental state after the debacle at the nut house last season with Larry, him inviting Conseula back into the fold after all she has done and now breaking bread with a racist from the deep south.. C’mon LC… You got some explaining to do and you better not say it’s about money because it is never just that for you.

Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dumb: Paris and Rio

Rio, oh where did we start with that one? He’s impulsive and tends to overcompensate unnecessarily. It’s clear that he is nothing like the other Duncan men and he doesn’t have to be. There is always a need for the legitimate front in the crime family so why is he do hell bent on getting his hands dirty with the most menial and unnecessary tasks like going after LowJack who knows the car thieves. Nevermind the fact that LowJack immediately returned Chippy’s car and swore he dealt with the thieves, no, Rio has to take matters into his own hands after being told to do the exact opposite. And Paris is right there to get in on the foolishness.

Paris, not far behind from her twin Rio in rash decisions, decides to attend the memorial of her deceased cousin, Sasha. Despite being shot down by Sasha’s grieving mother, she insists on being present to respect her friend. Good on her, right? But she gets flowers from a “supposedly dead man”, could this be her past love, Niles?

So…What Now?

Much like a wobbling Jenga tower, the Duncan family dynamic is teetering on the edge of disarray. With constant drama and strained relationships, it’s hard to tell when or how everything will come crashing down.

Will Sonia walk away from JR and choose herself? Will Paris, despite her stubbornness, find the answers to her “dead man” riddle? And will LC’s decision to pit himself against a brewing white supremacist Sheriff be his downfall?
