Misty Copeland Is Named a Principal at American Ballet Theater

Misty Copeland is a ballet dancer for American Ballet Theatre, one of the three leading classical ballet companies in the US. Making the cover of Time magazine and being profiled by “60 Minutes,” she’s, understandably, become the most famous ballerina in the US. Though she’s gaining more and more popularity via social media and performing in ballet’s biggest roles. However, a role that she has not fulfilled is principal dancer.


At least until Tuesday, June 30, when the 32-year-old became the first African American woman to be named a principal in the 75-year history of American Ballet Theater. Time also named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
