Growing Up Hip Hop is Back And Better Than Ever

I attended the Growing Up Hip Hop (GUHH) Season 4 Premiere and After Party in Los Angeles, California last week. Prior to the premiere I was able to speak with executive producer, Datari Turner, and cast members Master P, Damon Dash, Bougie Dash, Briana, Egypt and Angela Simmons. The vibe was very welcoming and renewed. The cast is in pre-production for season 5 and you can tell that energy is high for season 4. Everyone had an air of confidence and swag of comfortability. As this series has developed, you can look at its main characters such as Angela Simmons, Bougie Dash, Briana Latrise and even Romeo and see clear growth.

It’s refreshing to see individuals be so open with their life and its struggles while also being able to maneuver comfortably in their truth as the world watches. No one is saying that its easy but Angela gives viewers reason to believe that their is promise and purpose in living authentically open and finding peace amongst some cruel and unkind criticism. The shoes most harrowing feat (in my opinion) though is the cast as a wholes ability to display the cycles of life be it pain, pleasure, passions or struggles and echo a resounding “Me Too” to any young person watching letting them know they are not alone.

Dame and Bougie exploring the storyline of Bougies substance abuse is down right brave especially given the current landscape of young folk and the music that hails drugs, alcohol and sex as the holy grail of escapism. Angela going through a public break-up after surprising the world with a baby out of wedlock is pure “it happens and your life is not over realness.”

You can catch all of this and more every Thursday night on WeTV at 9pm. Check your local listings.
