Moguldum Studios premiered A Genius Leaves the Hood: The Unofficial Story of Jay-Z on June 21st at the American Black Film Festival in New York City. Producers of the documentary Jamarlin Martin, Marve Frazier and Director Barion Grant demonstrated how Jay-Z’s hustle from rags to riches and the animosity that came with it created the man we see before us today.

Shawn Carter (Jay-Z) is an ambitious man who fought his way to the top. He took each negative situation in his life and transformed it into a positive. He faced a lot of adversity and slander from people in the industry for his business decisions but those decisions have paved the way to his success, making him a natural born leader.

The documentary exposes how certain deals went down, who was involved and what sacrifices had to be made. It shows how Jay-Z took his survival skills from the hood and applied it to the world of business and entertainment. It shines light on the transition from Roc-A-Fella to Def Jam records and other important negotiations that led up to Jay-Z’s multimillionaire status. The Barclays Center controversy was also highlighted in the documentary, reporting how it got off on a rocky start but showing how it progressed as time went on.

“There was a lot of talk happening about the Barclay Center and a lot of speculation about what Jay is gonna do next in his career. We thought that it was appropriate to have this dialogue within our community while it was hot” said Lenny Bass, cinematographer at Moguldum Studios.

Moguldum Studios did a great job depicting how one man defeated the odds against him, pushed through swarms of hostility and made it to the top. As we know, “Genius is: 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration” and Jay-Z has shown how those ’99 Problems’ made 1 legendary hero. He may have left the hood, but he has given back in ways that are immeasurable.
