Gabourey Sidibe’s Harper’s Bazaar Photo Spread Gets Mixed Reactions
Gabourey Sidibe, best known for her role in the 2009 Oscar-nominated film Precious, appeared in the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar for a feature called Singular Beauties. The feature celebrated diversity among prominent female members of the entertainment industry. But the photos of Sidibe garnered both positive and negative reactions.
Even though the photo spread celebrated Sidibe’s heritage, many believed that it did not represent her physical image in a positive manner. While other photos in the magazine featured the curves and physical beauty of other women, Sidibe wore a shapeless red coat and an ornate rug over her head and shoulders. Her torso, legs, and feet were dressed in black, the same color as the background, which almost obscured them from view. Though her pose was confident and assertive, it was difficult to see and appreciate most of her body.
What do you think of the photo? Does it do Sidibe’s appearance justice, or did Harper’s Bazaar hide too much?
