B.Scott, Transgender Host, Is Suing BET $2.5 Million for Gender Discrimination
Frequent host on BET and popular internet personality B. Scott is suing BET for $2.5 million. After being pulled from hosting during the 2013 BET Awards, the transgender host claimed to be a victim of gender identity and gender-expression discrimination. He is suing BET for compensatory damages based on his complaints.According to B. Scott, he was working the 106 & Park Pre-Show as a style stage correspondent on the red carpet. At that time, Scott was wearing women’s clothing. Producers later pulled him aside and told him that his attire was inappropriate. Even though his outfit was approved before the show started, the producers still forced him to change his appearance. The lawsuit states that, “after his first segment, B. Scott was literally yanked backstage and told that he ‘wasn’t acceptable.’ He was told to mute the makeup, pull back his hair, and he was forced to remove his clothing and take off his heels; thereby completely changing his gender identity and expression.”
He was forced to change into men’s clothing before his hosting duties were handed over to Adrienne Bailon. Scott claims that once BET realized that they did not handle the situation properly, he was added back to the show as a co-host.
BET has yet to comment on the lawsuit or apologize for the incident, which added more insult to injury.
